Description

Greetings Sisters,

Welcome to the Sisters of the Skies’ Mentorship Program’s Mentor Application. Please read this information carefully as our mentorship program is continually expanding. The SOS Mentorship Committee currently offers four separate mentorship programs, and we are so excited you are considering volunteering to be a part of them! Please remember that in order to become a mentor for our program, you must be a current, paid member of Sisters of the Skies, Inc.

We have created these programs because it shows that the Sisters of the Skies cares about its current and future members. Our mentorship programs will also aid in creating a more engaged member, help with individual development, and foster a stronger sisterhood for the organization. As an SOS mentor, we hope that you will be willing to share your wisdom, skills, and expertise with your mentee, as well as evolve your thinking and deepen your mentoring skills.

The first program we offer is the Year-long program, the second is the Accelerated Program, the third is the Internal SOS Program, and the fourth is the Pipeline Program. The Year-long, Pipeline, and Internal SOS Programs run March through December, while the Accelerated Program runs July through December. During that time frame, we ask that you check-in with your mentees a minimum of once a month, however checking in more often is encouraged. More information about each program is listed below and will be provided in the mentor informational email you receive after registration.

The Year-Long (YL) and the Accelerated (AP) Mentorship Programs

These two programs are the core of the SOS Mentorship Program. They were designed to bridge the gap between the student pilot certificate and the required commercial pilot certificate needed to enter the Sisters of the Skies Organization, while continuing to allow those interested individuals to remain connected to the Sisters of the Skies through fellowship and community. They provide the necessary link that mentees need to inevitably join the Sisters of the Skies Organization. Most of all, these programs allow for a more prepared women of color entering the aviation industry. The Accelerated Mentorship Program is identical to the Year-long program, with the only difference being it starts in July. For the mentees, they must possess at least a student pilot’s certificate, must pay a non-refundable $15 application processing fee, must be at least 16 years of age, with parental consent below the age of 18, must fill out an online application, and complete our interview process.

The Internal SOS Mentorship Program (ISOS)

The Internal SOS Mentorship Program was created with the intention of providing mentorship and strengthening the sisterhood within the Sisters of the Skies Organization. The intent of the program is to pair sisters within SOS with mentors within the organization who are further along career-wise. For example, pairing a flight instructor with a regional airline pilot, or a regional airline pilot with a mainline pilot. The goal of the Internal SOS Mentorship Program is to pair sisters with someone to help guide them along as they continue to build time and experience, and progress in their career. Some mentors who may feel a little displaced from the current private pilot training curriculum, might feel more comfortable mentoring in the Internal SOS Program. Should a mentor volunteer to be a part of the Year-long/Pipeline/Accelerated Programs, they may also sign up to be a mentee in the Internal SOS Program.  Requirements to enter are that mentees must be current, paid members of Sisters of the Skies, Inc., pay a non-refundable $15 application processing fee, must fill out an online application and complete our interview process. Just go to the SOS website’s mentorship tab, request a mentor, and click the Internal SOS Program when submitting your application.

Pipeline Programs (PL)

The Pipeline Program was created to meet the ever growing needs we have from those individuals involved in aviation industry pipeline programs. This program is strictly for those individuals who are currently involved in an aviation pipeline program. Aviation pipeline programs include, but are not limited to, the Luke Weathers Flight Academy, the American Airlines Cadet Academy, the Delta Air Lines Propel Program, the United Airlines Aviate Program, the FedEx Purple Runway Program, the JetBlue Pilot Gateway Program, etc. If you graduated from or are currently a part of an aviation pipeline program, please indicate this within your application on the next page. There will be a space to indicate which aviation pipeline you were a part of. Mentees of aviation pipeline programs will be assembled together in small groups and assigned a mentor. Mentors who volunteer for this program will reach a wider audience and are charged to complete monthly video chat meetings with all of their mentees at once in a sort of classroom type open-discussion setting. The Mentorship Committee estimates mentors of the pipeline program will have an average grouping of five to ten mentees. Resources will be provided by the Mentorship Committee on how to conduct the monthly video meetings. For the mentees, requirements to enter are that they must possess at least a student pilot’s certificate, pay our non-refundable application processing fee, be at least 16 years of age with parental consent below the age of 18, fill out our online application, complete our screening interview process, and be enrolled in an aviation industry pipeline program.

As of right now, we are seeking sisters to volunteer their time as mentors for these programs. As a mentor, you would be committing to serve for the remainder of the year. Depending on when you start volunteering, your mentees may be in the Year-long, Pipeline, Accelerated, or Internal SOS Mentorship Programs. There is a point within the application to indicate which program you would be more comfortable with. The SOS Mentorship Committee will attempt to place you in your requested program to the best of our ability.

We appreciate you volunteering your time and resources to become a Sisters of the Skies Mentor. If you have any questions, or want more information, please feel free to contact the Mentorship Committee at mentors@sistersoftheskies.org. Once you have signed up, and your membership has been confirmed, you will receive a Mentor Informational Email.

Let’s continue to work together to help more sisters “Reach for the Sky!”
